4 Insightful Ways to Analyze Your Approach to Hiring and Recruiting Veterans
4 Insightful Ways to Analyze Your Approach to Hiring and Recruiting Veterans4 Insightful Ways to Analyze Your Approach to Hiring and Recruiting VeteransIs your office celebrating Memorial Day? Theres no better way to pay homage to those who serve our country than taking the time to reevaluate your approach to hiring and recruiting veterans.Weve discussed the many benefits that come with hiring veteran candidates. But it can be a challenge to seek out veteran candidates and make full use of their skills and expertise.Fortunately, we spoke with Army veteran and human resources recruiting professional Toya Hamilton. She offers tips on how to identify veteran candidates who will make a huge impact in your environment and explains how you can adjust your hiring perspective to be more inclusive to these candidates1. Educate yourself about the unique benefits and challenges that veterans bring to the tableOur opinions and insights into veteran candidates are formed by personal experience an d media coverage. Unfortunately, that can often cause us to act on unvetted biases and assumptions that might prevent you from seeing the full value a candidate brings to the table.Work through this possible bias by doing some research. Take the time to try to understand who youre hiring, says Hamilton. Google some of the background information. Ask questions about the experience. As a veteran and job seeker I went on a number of interviews in which the manager knew before they met me that I wasnt right for the job. But they wanted to get information about what I did while I was deployed and understand recruiting from the military side. I appreciated getting the experience, and it encouraged me to know that they were genuinely curious about my background and time in the tafelgeschirr.2. Dont make assumptions about educationWithout firsthand familiarity with military service, you may fall under the assumption that officers are the only service members with degrees. However, thats not the case.Youd be surprised how many people come into the military with undergraduate and even graduate degrees, says Hamilton. They wanted to get their student loans paid off when they get out, so they went to school and joined the service. If an applicant does not have a degree it doesnt mean they lack training. The military is all about coursework and training, says Hamilton. Anytime someone is promoted they go to school. As you screen candidates, keep in mind that every promotion represents a significant amount of education and training.3. Keep an open mind about each candidateSpeaking of stereotypes, the media isnt doing veterans in the workforce any favors. While commercials and television shows often represent veterans as dominant and forceful, the reality is that every veteran is as unique as every other job candidate.Dont judge military service members by what you see on TV, says Hamilton. Some of the quietest, sweetest people I have met were service members. Their experience in the service is just one part of their personality. Not every service person wants to take charge, either. The military trains you to adapt to different leadership styles and forms of management, says Hamilton. Service members are changing companies every three years and dealing with different personalities. The ability to adapt to the culture of a unit or organization is a valuable skill that should not be overlooked.4. Dont assume everyone has PTSDWhen you sit down to interview a candidate, dont assume that he or she suffers from PTSD. While PTSD is a serious issue and deserves attention and respect, in reality combat-related PTSD statistically affects 2 percent of veterans. Making the assumption that a veteran candidate has PTSD will limit the potential of your hiring pool. The real benefit is understanding that there are a number of benefits that come with recruiting service members for your open positions. The company I work for now actively recruits military service members be cause we know the value that comes with a strong and goal-oriented work ethic, says Hamilton. If you want to hire someone who works really hard and adapts to new situations, you cant go wrong with a veteran. They are going to work as hard as they can because they hate to be defeated. Theyre goal-oriented, driven and ready to overcome the odds to get the job done.

How to Spot Resistance to Change in Your Company
How to Spot Resistance to Change in Your CompanyHow to Spot Resistance to Change in Your CompanyWhat is resistance to change in your workplace and how does it manifest itself? Resistance to change is the act of opposing or struggling with modifications or transformations that alter the status quo. Employees put up a wall when they are poorly introduced to changes, when it affects how they work and when they dont see the need for the changes. They also experience resistance when theyre eitherbei notlage involved in the decision making process or if theyre left out of the procedural aspects of the process. When employees believe their input welches considered, they are less likely to experience resistance to change. Smart employers recognize this is a given before employees are asked to make any changes. Dont Cause Employee Resistance to the Actions You Take First things first be mindful that you arent the reason behind the resistance. You can cause serious resistance when you intr oduce change to your organization. You have enough to deal with when it comes to managing the stages of change adoption. Why add the stress of managing employee resistance? Avoid all of this by taking your employees feelings into account. And pay attention and care to all the details from the inception to implementation of the changes in order to minimize employee backlash. Managing Employee Resistance Is Challenging Managing resistance to change is challenging for many reasons. Resistance to change can be covert or overt, organized, or individual. Employees may realize they dont like or want a change and resist publicly, and that can be very disruptive. In a worst-case scenario, employees can be forceful in their refusal to adopt any changes and thus, bring the confrontation and conflict to your organization. Employees can also feel uncomfortable with the changes introduced and resist, sometimes unknowingly, through their actions, their language and in the stories and conversat ions they share in the workplace. Covert resistance to change can damage the progress of your desired changes seriously as it is mora difficult to deal with resistance that isnt visible, demonstrated or expressed except in these type of actions. However resistance to change is caused or happens, it can be a big threat to the success of your business, and can affect the speed at which your organization adopts an innovation. It affects the feelings and opinions of employees at all stages of the adoption process. Employee resistance also affects the productivity, quality, interpersonal communication, employee commitment to contribution, and the relationships in your workplace. Spotting Employee Resistance to Change How do you spot resistance to change? Listen to the gossip and observe the actions of your employees. Note whether employees are missing meetings related to the change. Late assignments, forgotten commitments, and absenteeism can all be signs of resistance to change. Som ething as simple as listening to how employees talk about the change in meetings and hall conversations can tell you a lot about resistance. Some employees may come to you for help navigating the changes. They may also share that the level of resistance is bringing them down. Some employees will publicly challenge the change, why it was needed or how it is unfolding. An employee who has a higher position and more seniority may be more resolute in his or her resistance. Less well-positioned employees may resist collectively in ways such as a work slowdown, staying home from work, misunderstanding directions, and, in rarer cases, organizing the workplace to bring in a labor union. Resistance to change appears in actions such as verbal criticism, nitpicking details, loudly and verballyfailing to adopt, snide comments, sarcastic remarks, missed meetings, failed commitments, endless arguments, lack of support verbally, and even, in a worst-case scenario, committing outright sabotage. Emp loyees also resist change by failing to take action to move in the new direction, quietly going about their familiar and accustomed business in the same ways as always, withdrawing their interest and attention, and failing to add to the conversations, discussions, and requests for input. Repeated Stress From Changes Resistance to change can intensify if employees feel they have been involved in a series of changes that have had insufficient support to gain the anticipated results. They become change weary when this years flavor-of-the-month is quality. Organizations are constantly evolving, which means (continuous) change is inevitable. Last years change was continuous improvement, employee involvement, and team development. This year its a focus on serving internal customers, and three years ago, employees were asked to adopt a new management structure in a lean, agile workplace. With things constantly changing, its no wonder employees end up being resistant. Resistance is inte nsified because you need to gain support for the current change, which employees may or may not see in their best interests. You will also need to justify the former change and the need to change- again. Employees only have so much energy to contribute at work and you dont want to abuse it. Minimize Resistance to Change In an organization that has a culture of trust, transparent communication, employees who are involved and engaged, and positive interpersonal relationships resistance to change is easy to see- and also much less likely to occur. In such a work environment, employees feel free to tell their boss what they think and to have open exchanges with managers about how they think the changes are going. They are also more likely to share their feelings and ideas for improvement. In a trusting environment, employees think about how to make the change process go more smoothly. They are likely to ask their managers what they can do to help. When a change is introduced in this environment, with a lot of discussions and employee involvement, resistance to change is minimized. Resistance is also minimized if there is a widespread belief that the changes are needed. Find out more about how to reduce employee resistance to change.

3 Mistakes All New Entrepreneurs Make
3 Mistakes All New Entrepreneurs Make 3 Mistakes All New Entrepreneurs Make Your problem is quite simple. You think you will not get hired. So, you go into business for yourself. Then you realize you need more than determination and a great idea. The mistakes were made, and you lost money. Now, you have to go get a job again. What went wrong? Most likely, you made one of these 3 mistakes all new entrepreneurs make. Case study: The best mac and cheese in the world The case study below is based on a true story. This 1st-time entrepreneur wanted a new career. But she lasted only 4 months before going out of business. This forced her to go back into the workforce. Entrepreneur mistake #1: All plans and no product Great: Your spouse says you make the best mac and cheese in the world. Not-so-great: It will go mainstream. You know the world will love it. So, you formulate a strategy and plan to hire the best people for the job. This is expensive. Mistake: The problem is you never created a prototype of the product to sell. All you have is that one time you made a great dinner. Speed to market is great, but you need something consistent to sell. Entrepreneur mistake #2: Expecting customers to magically show up Great: Your idea sounds great to everyone you speak within your network. Not-so-great: The product has gotten attention. Some strangers tried it. Unfortunately, so did the Food and Drug Administration. And so did the US Patent and Trademark Office. A trademark infringement was filed against you. Mistake: You launched your product. But now your network was afraid to try it because the FDA had to investigate you. The trademark infringement left your network afraid to talk about your product. Your friends loved it. But how much customer-retention can you expect from your friends? They cannot eat mac and cheese every day. No customer bothered to try it due to negative media attention. And you forgot to do one thing: Market your product. Your network and family was not enough to generate a loyal customer-base. Entrepreneur mistake #3: You kept your idea a secret Great: You knew you would have competition! So, you kept your idea a secret. After all, you have a family recipe that dates back more than 100 years! Not-so-great: Your idea was such a big secret that no one knew about it. Mistake: You forgot the one rule of thumb for starting a business: Competition is good for business. Competition challenges people to be better. Conflict in a market drives customers. Customers love to shop at companies competing for their dollars. Customers get bored if you are the only business doing one thing. Good competition forces businesses to innovate. Innovation drives change, growth, and leadership in an industry. This business closed after only four months and $1500 in sales. At least it was a learning experience for her next job. And if your company fails, it will be a stain on your resumeduring your next job search. Think about it before you make the leap Pick an industry. Think of all the businesses currently thriving in that industry. How many businesses can you name off the top of your head? Everything that works well can always be improved. Perhaps, you have an industry-disrupting idea. Make sure you have a product, market it well, and never become complacent. Customers shop in businesses that fight for their love. And companies hire people with successful track records.

Coping at Work When Youre Unhappy - The Muse
Coping at Work When Youre Unhappy - The Muse Coping at Work When Youre Unhappy Whether youâre bored or feeling unappreciated, sometimes your career can start to resemble a bad relationship. You may be at the point where youâre ready to throw in the towel and walk away for good. But before you write that resignation letter, consider these five strategies for finding out if the spark is really gone or if thereâs a way you can reignite it before you kiss your current career good-bye. 1. Pick Up a Little Somethinâ on the Side OK, yes, this is actually horrible relationship advice. But when it comes to your career, if youâre seeking a bit more excitement or flirting with a new position, consider testing it out as a side gig first. Whatever you do, be discreet. Donât gush about your new adventure to your co-workers, and by all means resist the urge to delve into it while youâre on the clock at your current job. Hereâs a great example of sampling a new path on your own time: I once knew a man who wanted to trade in his corporate cubicle for cabinet-making. To get a taste of the vocation that had tempted him for years, he used his vacation time to shadow a carpenter he knew. By the end of the week, he realized that while he loved working with his hands, he wasnât cut out for the back and forth with customers that accompanied this career. Able to put his âflingâ with wood-working behind him, he happily returned to desk job with a greater appreciation for it. 2. Take a Good Look at What Else Is Out There It can feel like everyone elseâs career is perfect- especially if youâre miserable. Every job post you look at seems rife with potential. But often the grass isnât really any greener. Take a long look at your alternatives before you bail on your current situation. A former colleague of mine was longing for a job that offered her more leadership, but after interviewing for a few different opportunities outside the company, she quickly found that sheâd be taking on more responsibility for the same salary while at the same time sacrificing her ability to work from home. Sheâd put in years at her current position and was happy with her benefits. When she compared what she had to what else was out there, she decided to recommit herself and try to improve that situation, which brings us to our next point ⦠3. Have a Conversation Talk it out. That same former colleague inspired her to talk to her supervisor and find ways to make her current position more stimulating. Before having that talk, her manager had no idea she was willing to take on a more managerial role. The same holds true for relationships- unless youâre involved with a gifted psychic- if you donât communicate your needs, chances are they wonât be met. Your boss isnât a mind-reader, and itâs up to you to talk to her about making potential changes with your work, particularly if youâre feeling restless or unhappy. 4. Get Counseling You may want to consider counseling. Career counseling, that is. Speaking with a professional coach can help you decide if your position is worth saving or if youâd be better off parting ways and finding something new. If youâre determined to make it work, a coach will help you devise a plan to turn things around or possibly move within the company if that turns out to be more desirable. If you reach the conclusion that youâve come to a dead end, an expert can guide you in getting back out there. Just as re-entering the dating scene calls for a bit of reinvention, before you jump back into the job market you might need to spruce up that resume or polish your interview skills. This (almost magical) person will assist you with that and more. 5. Take a Breather Take a break. This is a great way to discover which adage holds true: âOut of sight, out of mindâ or âabsence makes the heart grow fonder.â If youâve got vacation time saved up, use it. Maybe youâre just in a rut or burned out. Enjoy some time away, unplug, and give yourself permission to take a real breather. When you come back, hopefully refreshed and recharged, see if you have renewed enthusiasm for your current position. Think your issues are bigger than something a long weekend can fix? Opt for a real, faraway (or as far away as you can manage), unplugged vacation. No matter what length break you take, if you absolutely dread going back, then you'll know itâs time to make your move. As you go about coping, remember not to advertise your workplaces woes on social media. Youâll want to keep those #worstbossever tweets youâve been composing in your head offline, or you could find yourself dumped by your employer. Airing your dirty laundry is never a good idea, especially if your grievances are visible to potential employers. If your career is unfulfilling and seems to be going nowhere, you may be tempted to call it quits and start over. Before you make it official, try to see if thereâs anything you can do to rekindle your career flame and possibly save yourself some heartache.

How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis
How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis Published 7/11/2015 SWOT stands for: Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Strengths A SWOT analysis is used to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats relative to your company, unit or group, or a product, service or program you are responsible for. The SWOT analysis lets you focus on specific areas and discover actions that can help build on strengths, minimize or eliminate weaknesses, maximize opportunities, and deal with or overcome threats. A SWOT analysis is often conducted with a team and used to inform a strategy or strategic plan and (included as part of the appendix or supporting documentation). Teams will often start with a session on creating a shared vision, then follow-up with a SWOT analyses. See How to Align Your Team Around a Shared Vision. How to Conduct a SWOT Analysis: 1. Select an individual to facilitate the SWOT analysis. While a manager, team or project leader can lead their own SWOT analysis, it is often helpful to use an independent facilitator in order to free up the leader to fully participate and not bias the input from others. 2. Brainstorm a company or units strengthsGo around the room and solicit ideas from participants. Areas of strength for a company or unit include: leadership abilities, decision-making abilities, innovation, productivity, quality, service, efficiency, technological processes, and so forth. Record all suggestions on a flip chart. Avoid duplicate entries. Make it clear that some issues may appear on more than one list. For example, a company or unit may have a strength in an area such as customer service, but may have a weakness or deficiency in that area as well. At this point, the goal is to capture as many ideas on the flip charts as possible. Evaluating the strengths will take place later. See 15 Ways to Rain on a Brainstorming Session for tips on what to avoid when brainstorming. 3. Consolidate ideasPost all flip charts pages on a wall. While every effort may have been taken to avoid duplicate entries, there will be some ideas that overlap. Consolidate duplicate points by asking the group which items can be combined under the same subject. Resist the temptation to over-consolidate- lumping lots of ideas under one subject. Often, this results in a lack of focus.4. Clarify ideasGo down the consolidated list item by item and clarify any items that participants have questions about. Its helpful to reiterate the meaning of each item before discussing it. Stick to defining strengths. Restrain the team from talking about solutions at this point in the process.5. Identify the top three strengthsSometimes the top three strengths are obvious and no vote is necessary. In that case, simply test for consensus. Otherwise, give participants a few minutes to pick their top issues individually. Allow each team member to cast three to five votes (three if the list of issues is ten items or fewer, five if it is long). Identify the top three items. If there are ties or the first vote is inconclusive, discuss the highly rated items from the first vote and vote again. 6. Summarize strengthsOnce the top three strengths are decided, summarize them on a single flip chart page.7. Repeat Steps 2-6 for weaknessesSimilar to strengths, areas of weakness for a company or unit include: leadership abilities, decision-making abilities, innovation, productivity, quality, service, efficiency, technological processes, and so forth.8. Repeat Steps 2-6 for opportunitiesAreas of opportunities include: emerging markets, further market penetration, new technologies, new products or services, geographic expansion, cost reduction, and so forth. 9. Repeat Steps 2-6 for threatsAreas of threat include: entrance of a new competitor, legislation or regulations that will increase costs or eliminate a product, a declining product or market, and so forth. Conducting a SWOT analysis is a great way to develop a picture for where you are and where you need to go. Following these steps gives you a process for efficiently getting results in a way that involves and energizes a team.

Turning a Slow Work Day into a Time for Extra Productivity
Turning a Slow Work Day into a Time for âExtraâ Productivity Turning a Slow Work Day into a Time for âExtraâ Productivity Even after you have read your entire email backlog and organized your desk just so, there is still room for improvement. Once you file every email away into the proper archive, now is the time to save important messages, such as those regarding hiring and HR matters, emails you spent hours creating, and positive feedback you have received on your past efforts; these fit in great on a resume cover letter. Finally, take some time to handle any emails you keep putting off for the indefinite future. After youâve completely overhauled and organized your email collection itâs time to catch up on any calls to clients or other VIPs. Even if you call to simply touch base, get their feedback on how things are going and where they have found any room for improvement. This is an excellent trust and relationship building activity that shouldnât be overlooked when you find yourself with some extra time to spare. One thing though, make sure you have a purpose when calling out of the blue or come to a mutual agreement on when a good time to call may be. You may be making calls largely to kill time but the other person may be inconvenienced by an unannounced call. Even though you find yourself twiddling your thumbs at your desk, some of your colleagues may be swamped with catching up. If your immediate coworkers are in no need of assistance, take the extra time to learn about other departments and even gain new skills if one of them should request your assistance. Helping others is always appreciated and never goes unnoticed. But should your entire organization be in a slow phase, actively seek out new projects. Browse through company materials and look for out-of-date information that should be replaced or identify parts that could be made clearer in successive updates. This not only helps your organization as a whole but your initiative reflects well on you with the higher ups. But, of course, there are always periods where you may not have enough time to start a project, help a colleague, or seriously edit corporate materials. Should you have only an hour or less to kill, look for brief, self-centered activities such as your own professional development. Think about aspects of your job or organization that you would like to know more about and read up on them. Browse industry blogs, update your network, catch up on trends, and otherwise work to increase your value. All of that having been said, if you find that you are regularly faced with extended periods of unproductiveness, you may need to approach your boss and develop projects that will allow you to contribute to your company. After all, while the occasional slow period may help you normalize, having slow days every day is a symptom of a deeper issue.

Best Job Search Engine Sites
Best Job Search Engine Sites Best Job Search Engine Sites Job search engines are websites that include job listings from all over the internet. While job boards only include jobs directly listed by employers, job search engines include job listings from company websites, other job boards and more. Therefore, job search engines typically list more jobs than job boards. Using a job search engine can save you lots of time, since you do not have to search for jobs on multiple websites. There are many job search engines out there and it can be difficult to know which ones are best. Here is information on the top job search engines, plus tips on how to use them. Best Job Search Engine Sites Google for JobsGoogle for Jobs is a job search engine powered by Google. It compiles listings from many different sources, including other job search engines. Users can save job listings, share jobs, turn on email alerts, and apply for jobs directly on Google. Indeed.comIndeed includes millions of job listings from thousands of websites, including company career pages, job boards, newspaper classifieds, associations and blogs. Advanced search options include experience level, date posted, and company. You can also sign up for email alerts for new job postings. Best Niche Job Search SitesNiche job search sites include jobs based on specialized criteria like type of position, career field, or industry. For example, there are niche sites for healthcare jobs, engineering jobs, jobs for students, government jobs, and more. Here is a list of some of the best niche job sites. Tips for Using a Job Search Engine Find your favorite. Searching many job search engines at once can be overwhelming. After checking out some of the top job search engines, select one or two of your favorites. Perhaps you will focus on a niche job search engine or one that has a useful advanced search option. Limiting the number of job search engines you use will keep you from getting overwhelmed. Use the advanced search. Most job search engines have an advanced job search option, which is a great way to narrow down the many listings. The general search option usually allows you to include only a keyword or phrase and a location. With the advanced search option, you can further narrow your search by company, industry, salary, and type of job (internship, part-time job, etc.). Using the advanced search option is a helpful way to make sure you look only for jobs that are a good fit. Create an account. If you find a job search engine you really like, consider registering for an account. Typically, registration is free. Most job search engines allow you to upload a resume and cover letter when you register, to make applying to jobs easier. Usually, you can also bookmark jobs or request regular emails (sometimes known as job alerts or job search agents) with the latest job listings that fit your specifications. Use the app. Most job search engines also have an app you can download to your phone. If you are actively job searching, download the app so that you can quickly check for job listings on the go. Many apps send you job alerts by email or on your phone as well. Watch out for multiple listings. One drawback to job search engines is that, because there are so many listings from multiple places, repeated listings are common. Be careful to avoid repeat listings, as well as expired job listings.

However, select one or two specific credentials you are lacking, and make an effort to develop those skills. For example, if you lack knowledge in a particular computer program, but it is a requirement for your dream job, sign up for a free or inexpensive online course, such as a massive open online course (MOOC), that will help you develop that skill. edx is a global nonprofit education website that provides courses for those interested in learning new skills. Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX provides courses to more than 20 million learners, top-ranked universities, and industry-leading companies. The organization aims to remove the barriers of cost, location, and access to make learning more attainable. If you cannot find an online course that fits your needs or if you do not like taking online courses, look to your local public library, adult education program, or community college to see if they offer free or inexpensive courses on such topics. Adding Skills to Your Resume Once you begin learning new skills, you can add them to your resume. For example, if you are learning to use WordPress, you can list it in the skills section of your resume, noting the name of the course you are taking and the expected completion date. Even improving upon one weakness in your credentials can make you a much stronger candidate during the hiring process. Demonstrating Your New Knowledge If an interviewer expresses concern with, for example, your lack of a particular foreign language, you can explain that you are currently taking a course to develop that ability and perhaps provide a few examples of what youve learned. This will not only demonstrate that you are working toward having the skills required for that job, but also that you have such an interest in the job that you are willing to learn a recommended skill to increase your chances of getting hired. Employers will appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to become better qualified. Bottom Line Determining what you really want to do and obtaining the necessary qualifications and skills can increase your chances of getting hired and boost your job choices. Even if you are already employed, it is a good idea to keep your skills current by taking advantage of learning opportunities in your workplace. This can further your career through advancement to more senior positions within your company or with other firms.

Why personal development will make you feel miserable
Why personal development will make you feel miserable Why personal development will make you feel miserable âWe canât ignore problems - we just need to approach them from the other side.â - Cooperider WhitneyLife is a never-ending puzzle. The moment you figured out something, a new challenge arises. Thus, personal development is a perpetual quest - becoming the best version of yourself requires everyday practice. But thereâs a dark side to personal development: some approaches are manipulative - they make you feel thereâs something wrong about you. This dark side approach - in the form of a book, workshop or video - encourages an obsession toward perfection. It forces us to compare to others. And promotes unrealistic expectations. We end thinking we are not good enough. The dark side to personal development promises you a better future at the expense of enjoying your present. Avoid any approach that offers nothing but rehashing your vast inadequacies. You are not a problem to be solved - your life is something to be discovered, not to be fixed.Discover the other side. You are not a problemThereâs only one thing Iâm certain about: I donât have everything figured out. That I coach teams, facilitate workshops or write about change and personal growth doesnât mean I have all the answers.Iâve learned a lot in my life and throughout my career. The most important lesson is that things donât go our way most of the times. Itâs not always easy. But realizing that things donât go wrong just because of me has helped me a lot. I reflect and think of how I can improve my behavior. But I donât blame myself.Iâm not a problem to be solved (you are not either). Most of us were brought up thinking thereâs something inherently wrong with us. Most educational, religious, and psychological approaches operate under the premise that people have a problem. And that we need to be cured. The belief that we need to be fixed harms our growth. We pursue unrealistic expectations: Having goals and challenges is good, but letting other people define your achievements i s not healthy. Pleasing others is a moving target - you end pleasing no one, yourself included. We get stuck in whatâs wrong: Approaching your life as a problem makes you focus on whatâs not working. We are all full of flaws and imperfections, but we are more than that. We need to see the other (positive) side to improve. We compare ourselves to others: Seeing other people as inspiration or role models is good, but using others as a bar is deceiving. We are never good enough. We end seeing the good in others and whatâs wrong with us.We end taking take ourselves too seriously, as I wrote here. What if we start considering ourselves (and our lives) from a place of abundance rather than of deficit?Leverage your uniqueness. Appreciate your personality, strengths, emotions, experiences, and happiness - your positivity lifeâs assets.A positivity frameworkâThe negative screams at you but the positive only whispers.â - Barbara FredricksonYour emotions affect your outlook. A posi tivity framework encourages building on whatâs already working instead of being obsessed about what we need to fix.Negative emotions narrow our momentary thought and action repertoire. When we feel fear, we focus our attention and energy on surviving - we want to get rid (or run away) from the menace.Positive emotions are more effective - they encourage new ways of thinking and action. However, as positive emotions donât emerge when under attack, we donât give them their deserved value - we are used to paying more attention to our problems than to whatâs working.Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson extensive research discovered that positive emotions provide two key benefits: Open our minds: they increase awareness and expand our peripheral vision Build resilience: they prepare us to bounce back from adversity. Fredricksonâs Broaden-and-Build theory states that positive emotions allow people to step back and see the bigger picture. Research validates how positivity feelings widen the scope of what we see - they help us discover more ideas and possibilities.According to the expert, there is a whole range of emotions that change the boundaries of our mind. Like being grateful, feeling inspired by great leaders, being in tune with our environment, sharing laughter with a friend, or feeling the love and closeness of people we care for.Multiple studies show that giving a bag of candy or asking people to remember a positive emotion before a test or a job interview dramatically impacts their performance.Unfortunately, positivity fades quickly. We must increase our daily intake of positive emotions.Fredrickson recommends a 3-to-1 positivity ratio - that proportion can predict flourishing. 80% of Americans fall short. You can take the quiz and see how you score. The impact of positivity goes well beyond your mood. The psychologist explains how positive emotions affect our cells development too. By broadening our awareness, they change who we are in the future. The best of what you areâWhat lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.â - Ralph Waldo EmersonWe grow in the direction of what we persistently focus on.Encouraging positive emotions promotes an appreciation mindset - we acknowledge the good stuff in our lives.Rather than focusing on what we need to fix, we can leverage the best of what has been and what is.Thatâs the approach behind Appreciation Inquiry, a change management methodology grounded in theories from organizational behavior, sociology and psychology. Its principles can be applied to personal development too.Appreciation Inquiry is the act of recognizing the best in yourself and the world around you. It uses questions to uncover whatâs working - it encourages amplifying the good, instead of ruminating on whatâs wrong. The process includes four stages: Discovery: To find, emphasize, and illuminate any factors that have led to âthe bestâ in a given situation. What gives life? Focus on appreciating whatâs working for you. Dream: Itâs about challenging the status-quo and imagining possibilities - you begin to dream of what could be or needs to be. What might be? Visualize an exciting future state. Design: You focus on creating what you want and how your ideal scenario could work. Itâs about identifying concrete and actionable ideas that will move you closer to your dream. How can it be? Define how the dream would look like. Destiny: An invitation to construct your future - itâs the commitment toward your aspiration. You involve those who will help you get there as well. What will be? Craft an actionable plan and make it happen. Appreciation Inquiry helps us cultivate the best within ourselves - broaden your possibilities. The other side of personal developmentâFind the goodness that is already within you.â - Eckhart TolleThe dark side of personal development is built on certainty - it provides truism and advice regardless of the context. The other side encourages you to find the answer - questions uncover what is working and will work for you.Inquiries provide direction - they move us from ignorance through curiosity to discovery. Most questions are loaded - they carry a constructive or destructive purpose. Beautiful questions invite us to see ourselves and our reality through a different lens - we donât judge the question, we want to find better answers. Our culture prioritizes certainty over curiosity. Most people feel intimidated - they fear being seen as ignorant if they ask questions. The power of Appreciative Inquiry lies in seeing questions to acknowledge the positive, stimulate reflection, and notice what is valuable. You are expected and encouraged to ask questions. AI creates a pathway to inspire, intrigue, excite, discover, invite, and co-create.Here are some questions to get you started.1. Identify High-PointsThink back through your life (or career). What has been a high-point experience when you felt most alive, successful, and effective. Describe how you felt, and what made the situation possible. What are the most significant stories in your life?Where are things going well in your life?Where are you making a difference?2. Understand the WhyWhy did it happen that way? Examine Beliefs, Values, Perceptions. What stories were you telling yourself or images were you portraying in your mind that led you toward the outcomes? When has that happened other times?3. What You Value MostWithout being humble, what do you value most about yourself (or your work or your organization)?4. Apply LearningsWhat can you continue doing to keep amplifying the good? What can you begin to do to move your life (or team) in the direction of our greatest desires? What can you stop doing because it no longer serves or gets in the way?How would you apply the learnings elsewhere?5. Dream The FutureDescribe your three concrete wishes for the future of your life (or organization). Imagine the future three years from now.Whatâs happening that makes it vibrant and successful? What has changed? What has stayed the same? How have you contributed to this future?- - - The dark side of personal development wants to make you think thereâs something wrong with you. But thereâs not. You have flaws - just like me and everybody else.Positivity not only expands your mind - it helps you discover the good within you. Focus on whatâs working, not on what needs to be fixed. Move in the direction of what you most desire.Gustavo Razzetti is a change instigator that helps organizations lead positive change.
