In addition to goals, there was a resulting dollar amount tied to most everything. His was written in a way that it broke big ideas down and detailed certain parts of his visualized accomplishments. Using my coachs visualization as a model, I developed my own. It is one page. It serves as a motivation and helps me focus every single day (I have it right next to my keyboard, and on my fridge). Its easy to get distracted, or at least wonder if Im distracted (I have JibberJobber stuff (design for the programmers, marketing and PR, accounting, admin stuff, etc.), this blog, book marketing (thank goodness the writing is done!), and a conference that Im putting on with a partner in October. Not to mention stuff outside of work Im pretty busy, and its easy for me to either get too focused on one thing, or spend a lot of time on a lot of things with no focus. Thats where the visualization comes in like I said, it does two things for me: It motivates me. I look at the numbers, which right now are targets, and think about how things will be different once I achieve them. My visualization very specifically declares the income Ill have from various revenue streams, and for a guy coming out of unemployment, thats very motivating. It refocuses me. My most important target is in the first five words of the visualization document. It just happened that way which is interesting because its obviously the most important thing on my mind when I wrote it. But now, more than 60 days after I wrote it, I find myself using the visualization to see if Im deviating, or indeed working towards the goals I set. I cant share my personal visualization here on my blog its too private. But tomorrow Ill write a visualization that I should have written for my job search and youll see how it differs from a regular old mission statement. How to Use Foursquare For Recruitment People are using location-based phone applications more regularly now; for check-ins, offers and special events. FourSquare is an app that uses the location services on a smart phone to check people into to nearby registered places, with the ability for users to become Mayors and collect special offers. This freely available data is a great tool for recruiters who may want to use a new method of seeking candidates especially those passive candidates that may not be looking actively for a job. Profile As with any social network it is crucial that, as a recruiter, you look like a real person when using the application or website. Once you have registered for your free account, ensure your profile is filled out with the  correct (and up-to-date) information (name, phone number, e-mail address, bio, location and gender) with a high-quality photo uploaded (the image to the left is an example of a rubbish profile!). Do not use your Foursquare profile as a secret profile with very little information you want candidates to notice you, to connect with you and not just pass on by thinking you are fake. As with Facebook pages, it could also be useful to create a brand page for your company, especially if you have various locations for your offices or premises. You can do this through your own personal profile, and it is extremely easy to keep control of all your FourSquare locations from the one page. You can leave tips, update details, and people can follow your page adding to your companys employer branding and social presence. Guerilla marketing FourSquare is fantastic for guerilla marketing especially when you can use other venues to advertise your jobs. If you are filling a position at a certain office/location, travel to that location and open up FourSquare. At venues nearby (such as coffee shops etc), leave Tips which are relevant to the place (e.g. Try the Fish of the Day), but add a little note about your job (Try the Fish of the Day, and then come over to [place] as we are hiring!). Using this method will leave the tips on the venues, and users can find them when checking into the venues, or just browsing the application. Dont make it too obvious that you are using it as an advertising method make the tips relevant to the location, but just add a note about your open position. You can even add photos to tips so if you want to really suggest a plate, add a photo of it when writing the tip itll make your tip more interesting to users that are browsing the venues page. Twitter search FourSquare has a sharing option via its app for users to post their check-ins to their Twitter feed most FourSquare users use this option, and therefore its an easy way to check who goes where and when. FourSquare posts on Twitter can be useful for two reasons for checking the right time to contact a candidate (ie if they are in a cafe every day at lunchtime, contact them then!) and to see who checks in at your business or nearby (which may not be completely viewable on FourSquare. There is an extremely easy way to search for FourSquare check-ins on Twitter. Simply enter 4sq.com and then the company name (example above) this will show you all the FourSquare users who have shared their checkins at that certain location, and especially when they have done so. You can then research them from using the details on their profile, and decide whether to contact them about the position. It will also give you an idea (from their tweets) of their personality something you may not get from looking at their FourSquare profile. Also use the search option to see people who check in near to your location or business this can save time when looking for the right people who need to be local for the job. Mayors FourSquare has a exclusive element Mayorships. When a user checks in to a venue more days than any other use over a 60 day period, they become Mayor of the venue, and this is  publicly  visible on the FourSquare venue page. At some venues, mayors are rewarded with special offers and prizes. Take a look at the venues around your company are there any mayors at these places? Do these people own mayorships to various places in a certain vicinity of your company? Contact them, they may be interested in working there too! Conclusions FourSquare is one of my favourite applications on my phone the stats are brilliant and its simple to use. Its also free, and if you use these tips along with the Twitter searching and mixing it with finding LinkedIn profiles, you will recruit the best talent and save time checking whether they live nearby. How to Deal with Rejection How to deal with rejection clue isnt not a tub of ice cream! Youve ticked every box, spent hours on the perfect CV, you aced the telephone interview, stood out in the group interview, asked all the right questions and wrote a personal unique thank you note you waited and waited for feedback and then it came. You didnt get the job! How?   This was probably your first question and youre no doubt frustrated and ready to give up. Unfortunately, in the recruitment process you are going to have times where you dont secure the position but remember it is not always personal. Most employers are currently getting approximately 118 applications per role which means inevitability not all applicants who are right for the role can get through. Mindset is a huge part of the recruitment process and this is even more applicable when you get the feedback that you havent been successful. Always remember you didnt fail instead this is just a setback and you need to stay motivated to try again. Getting Feedback It is so important to get feedback from every unsuccessful application you send off. If the interviewer hasnt openly given feedback then definitely ask. This will help you pinpoint the areas where you might be struggling. For example if you got through the sifting stage and the telephone interview then you can assume youve done well in those sections. However if you didnt pass the face to face interview that is probably where your prep needs revisiting and needs more work. Make note of all the feedback your given. Whether it was an answer to a particular questions or the image you presented to the employer. Sometimes we do things in interviews completely unconsciously  so being aware of this can help you try to avoid it next time. (For example some applicants can actually come across uninterested or even not bothered in an interview but really that is just their way they present themselves when they are nervous.) Knowing this can help you to attempt to train yourself out of doing that; potentially through completing mock interviews to reduce the nerves. What to do next? Try, Try and Try again. I couldnt make it clearer that the recruitment process might not be the most difficult process. It is absolutely one of the most time consuming tasks (ever heard the phrase finding a job is a job in itself I fully agree.) Youre going to need to spend a lot of your time focusing on finding a new job. Always have your end goal in mind to keep you driven and just remember that when you are successful in getting that job. You wont need to do this again straight away (like my mum would always say this is a means to an end.) Should you reassess? As I mentioned you should always keep your goal in mind. Dont just give up after the first huddle but there is probably a time where you should reevaluate whether what you are aiming for is achievable. Dont panic I am not suggesting anyone should just settle at a certain point and take second best. The job market is ever changing so you may have changed so your spec might have to alter too.Sit down and really think about all the reasons why you might have been unsuccessful on several occasions. (this is much easier if you have your interview feedback.) Now this isnt supposed to be about criticising yourself and picking out every made up fault you think you have. This needs to be constructive. Like ticking off your shopping list you need to ensure every box in the recruitment process is checked; revisit your CV and make sure it was detailed enough, ask yourself did you go the extra mile and send that thank you note or send them your portfolio of work? If you start seeing some boxes un-ticked then these are the areas to spend a little bit more time on next time round. What are you worth? Its not everyones favourite subject but another key aspect to consider is the salary you peg yourself at. Especially if you have been searching for a while. Now I am definitely not suggesting that if you have been searching for a while then drop £10,000 off your asking price. But I am saying you need to do your research (knowledge is power all over again!) So what am I referring to when I tell you to do your research? Well certain job values can go up and down in a similar way to housing markets. If a job is in high demand by employers due to a lack of qualified applicants then the salaries employers pay will be much higher. Simply if you have been out of the game for a while its worth having a look online to see what the average is for that sector. You can do this on most job board. Break it down by region as certain place such as London will pay more. Always remember recruitment is not a game of quantity. Dont measure your success at the end of the day by how many applications you have forwarded through but instead measure your successful on how tailored you made each applications.  Yes doing this is going to take a lot more time than pressing applying on every job on the job boards but your ratio to success will be much greater.   Top Tip Alert Put aside some serious time into your job search. (surely  you can miss one night out or just not binge watch that show on netflix for one weekend.) Ask for help; its much easier than doing it all alone. Reach out to your network, whether that be to review your CV or go through a mock interview with you. Research until you know as much about the company as the CEO. Well maybe you dont need to know that much but you should know the ins and outs of a company. Also, try not to have verbal diarrhoea. Instead feed your research into your answers throughout the interview not just madly at the end. Get detailed feedback after every interview. Remember due to the volume of applications   it is unlikely you will get feedback after just submitting an application. Always remain enthusiastic and proactive in your job search. Its so easy to be demotivated when you havent been success first time round but use it as a learning curve. Remember to stay positive when you are searching for a new career and never give up, in the words of  Elbert Hubbard: “There is no failure except in no longer trying.”
